Here’s a wrap up of what I’m reading lately. To get daily updates on this check most of the way down on the right hand column of www.itsfrugalbeinggreen.com.
Finance
- The Hows and Whys Of Our Car Purchase: A 2009 Toyota Prius at The Simple Dollar – I don’t need to buy a new car right now but I’m saving for one just in case something happens (a friend recently had her’s stolen) and if I was in the market to buy a Prius would be one of my top picks
- Defeating Temptation: 10 Questions to Ask Yourself When You’re Tempted to Buy at Get Rich Slowly – a question I frequently ask myself is “What Do I Want Most?“
Food
- Produce – Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen Updated at Focus Organic – I’m using these lists to maximize what I get for my money when I buy organic
- Last Minute Little Dinners for One: Tips, Ideas, and 25 Recipes at Cheap Healthy Good – I usually make a meal plan with meals for 3 or 4 nights a week but I need something for the other nights and if I’m not feeling like leftovers these ideas are great
Green
- What Do You Think of Dishwasher Drawers? at The Kitchn – I love them and wish I had them but since I’m in a rental it’s not really my choice. Since I live alone it takes me awhile to fill up the dishwasher and being able to do half loads would be perfect
- Reducing the Junk Mail Footprint at Green Inc (NYT) – Emailing or calling to get yourself of junk mail and catalog lists not only helps you be more green but will help you want less and be more frugal too

It’s easy to recycle batteries. Don’t forget to take yours to your local battery collection point.

On buying a car: We checked out a number of models before settling on the Honda Fit. It is a manual/standard transmission. We get an average of 40 MPG. (Depending on air condition use, we’ve seen 37.5 up to 43.2)
I personally feel this is much better than the Prius. Everything that i’ve read about hybrid cars is that their batteries are very expensive, AND creating these batteries is harder on the environment than producing 3 regular cars.
My husband says the Honda Civic Natural Gas car is the best for the environment, but at the time we bought our last car (the Fit) we didn’t have anywhere to fill it up at home.
I know you said you aren’t in the market for a car now, but the hybrid cars aren’t all that great, unless you are looking at gas mileage only.
I just went from your post to the Carmax.com site and noticed that you are both using basically the same graphic of the piggy bank – just FYI because it was disconcerting!

it’s a stock image i purchased from http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup.php?id=3037994 which is a site i use for making money by selling my photos and i want to support by buying images from other users there when i don’t have photos of my own that fit my needs. i’m not affiliated with carmax in anyway – someone there must’ve just liked the same photo i did.
