Saving for a Wii and Wii Fit

by Carrie on January 18, 2010

I want to make sure that my muscles don’t atrophy during this time I have cancer so I need to make sure to get in some light exercise on a regular basis. Ideally I’d love to take a yoga class but my white blood cell counts and thus my ability to fight infection is extremely low and exposing myself to any foreign germs in a class environment isn’t right for me at this time.

I’ve decide to get a Wii and Wii Fit. Wikipedia notes that, in addition to being the second best selling console video game ever, it’s used in physiotherapy settings for rehabilitation and in nursing homes for gentle exercise which is exactly what I need right now.

$200 for the Wii and another $100 for the Wii Fit is a hefty chunk of change though. I can’t fit a $300 splurge in my January budget so I’ve decided to wait until February for the purchase.

Even though we’re only about halfway through January, waiting to make a large purchase has already proven to be worthwhile. I’ve already got almost $75 in Amazon credit saved up thanks to Swagbucks, my credit card rewards, and winning a prize for participating in a user survey at Smart Family Tips. I’m also expecting another $10 to $15 in Amazon credit from Swagbucks by the end of the month. (Swagbucks is a search engine that gives you points for searching, 45 points are redeemable for a $5 Amazon gift card. In my first month, I earned enough points for one $5 giftcard and each month since I’ve been earning points even faster. Try it out.)

Having a good third of the expense covered by giftcards is really going to help my February budget since I’m hoping to be on disability leave come February and my income will be reduced by about a third and the Wii Fit will give me a way to keep active even while staying home.

I was just talking to my sister about the Wii yesterday and how it would be great for rehab. They should make a wii rehab specifically designed for physical therapy. Good luck on your quest to get a wii and wii fit – they are super fun.

You are going to love the Wii and Wii Fit. My husband and I bought the Wii Fit for ourselves for Christmas and it was such a great investment into our health! They make a Wii Yoga game too you really might enjoy.

Hi Carrie,

Best of luck saving up for your Wii and Wii Fit! It sounds like it will be a great purchase for you.

Good for you! Just get the Wii Fit Plus though, and not the regular. A much better game!

We bought the Wii and Wii Fit Plus about two months ago and our whole family loves it. Watch for deals while you are waiting to save up the money. We were able to buy the Wii at Wal-Mart for $199 and got a $50 Wal-Mart gift card back, which we used towards purchasing the Wii Fit Plus.

It’s funny, I haven’t seen a SINGLE comment on any blog anywhere that says, “The Wii Fit sucks! Don’t buy it!”–instead, just tons of people who, like me, think it’s pretty fabulous.

It’s also, by the way, by far the least energy-consuming of the major video game systems, so while not fully “green,” I guess, it’s a heckuva lot closer than anyone else seems to be trying to be.

FWIW, I did a post on it here:

It’s a good system–my 4 year old uses it, my husband and I use it, my mother-in-law at her rehab center uses it…it’s good on so many levels. Good luck–I hope you can get one!
peace,
Jenn

I have a Wii and a Wii Fit and really like them. One way I “green it up” is to unplug the Wii when I’m done using it. It still saves all of my settings and information for the next time we use it. I didn’t buy the special Wii rechargeable batteries. I bought regular rechargeable AA batteries that fit in the battery recharger I already have.

I also found some good deals on used Wii games at Game Stop. Most of the titles I’m interested in are the older ones and luckily that’s the only place I could find them!

my house is arranged weirdly such that the best place for the tv set up was at the outlet that the switch in the room goes to so i can flip my whole entertainment system off very easily which is handy (would be handier if that switch went to a plug that was useful for the lights but that’s not the case)

Do you have a netflix account? Not sure if you want to try it but you can rent out work out dvd’s as well. Something else to help you during this time.

i’ve had one in the past and there aren’t enough movies i want to watch to make it worth it and i got bad about getting the dvds then not wanting to watch them and sending them back without watching.

We received a Wii fit for Christmas, and I have to say it’s fantastic! I did have to get over it’s assessment of my BMI and overall weight, but after you’ve gotten into the groove, it’s a very usefull tool. Shed 10 pounds so far!
