Reusable shopping bags are not something you should need to buy. Most people I know have a stash of tote bags that they’ve gotten free via various promotions and events. Here’s how I got mine:
Safeway O Organics bag – when I signed up for my Safeway club card I received a coupon book that contained a coupon for 1 free reusable tote
Chipotle totes – I attended an event following the Tour de California bicycle race a year or two ago and got not only a free burrito but also 2 free tote bags there
The Best Bag – a client of mine at my old job needed a logo, brochures, and business cards for reusable grocery bags they were selling, I got one free from them after the job was completed
TastyBaby – at my current job, my company was exhibiting at the Fancy Food Show just a few booths over from TastyBaby who were giving away tote bags – at the end of the last day they passed the extras out to all the nearby exhibitors
That gives me 5 tote bags, and the tote bags all seem to hold a lot more than the traditional plastic shopping bags, so this is more than enough bags for even my largest shopping trips. I’m really good about taking them to the grocery store but I need to get better about bringing one in with me on trips to the drugstore or Target.
Where have you been able to score free tote bags?

I got mine from a site http://www.prelovedbags.org. they were selling buy on get one free a couple of months ago and it so far has been the best bag as it folds into a pouch so I always have it even when going to Target and such.
Here in Australia, all the supermarkets sell them (with their own branding printed on them) for 99c. You can also get insulated ones with a zipper lid for about $2-$4 for carry the cold stuff.
I make it a point of buying a new bag if I go shopping and forget to take mine with me, rather than taking a plastic bag. It’s helping me to remember
