Organic in a Budget Friendly Way

by Carrie on March 23, 2009

A year ago I was trying to buy all organic produce and dairy but since I’m trying to be more budget friendly these days I’m cutting back on the organic products a bit.

I’m still always buying organic milk which I drink on a daily basis. Butter and eggs I use less frequently and may or may not buy organic these days depending on how close or far the prices are apart.
For produce, I’m using the FDA and USDA’s guide on the 12 fruits and vegetables conventionally grown with the most pesticides. The fruits and vegetables on this list I’m trying to buy organic and others I’m saving my pennies and going conventional.
  1. Apples
  2. Bell Peppers
  3. Carrots (Safeway frequently has organic carrots on sale at great prices)
  4. Celery
  5. Cherries
  6. Grapes, imported
  7. Kale
  8. Lettuce (Safeway frequently has their organic salad mixes on sale at great prices)
  9. Nectarines
  10. Peaches
  11. Pears
  12. Strawberries
What products do your prioritize buying organic?

It’s nice to find someone else that tries to be organic when possible on a budget! Most people tell me they can’t do it – but I try when I can. The things we “have” to get organic are eggs, meat, milk, apples, potatoes, carrots. I will be flexible with other things, but try to buy organic if on sale! Thanks for the list.

yeah, i’d add potatoes to the list. my general rule is to buy organic for all meat and dairy and most thin-skinned produce (with the exception of blueberries). also, i try to get root veggies organic since they soak up what’s in the soil and if it’s not organically used soil, you can end up eating a lot of the crap growers are trying to get rid of.

@Connie

“also, i try to get root veggies organic since they soak up what’s in the soil and if it’s not organically used soil, you can end up eating a lot of the crap growers are trying to get rid of.”

I recently saw another list of the fruits and vegetables that are conventionally grown with the least pesticides and sweet potatoes were on that list despite the fact that I’d consider them a root vegetable.

good point. sweet potatoes are another exception. no rule is set in stone, i just use those as guidelines.
