Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America

by Carrie on February 14, 2009

One of the most insightful books I’ve read in a very long time is Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America. If you’ve ever needed a reason to appreciate budgeting and investing and not living paycheck to paycheck, this book is it.

Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America is the author’s first hand tale of working minimum wages jobs and living a minimum wage lifestyle in various regions of the country. She works jobs waitressing, cleaning, and folding clothes at Walmart and is really taken advantage of in each of those positions.

This book should make anyone feel greatful about their job and financial position.

A while back, our local newspaper did a whole series on the premise of this very book, but I never read it. Actually, I had forgotten about it until now.
