As a follow up to yesterday’s saving for a new car post, I’d like to mention that I tagged along with my dad while he bought a new car yesterday afternoon. I would describe my dad as the cheapest person on the planet, he is a shrewd negotiator.
This was his first new car purchase since 1992. His 1992 Chrysler minivan is long past totaled but failed it’s smog check this year. The State of California is giving him $1,000 for it since it’s in working condition but doesn’t pass smog (yes, that program does still have funding available).
He was looking at replacing that Chrysler with another Chrysler since he thought he could get about 30% off MSRP due to the financial state of Chrysler. However, Volkswagen is now producing minivans called Routan based on the same design Chrysler uses. (I’m not personally thrilled with the environmental friendliness of minivans but the other car my parents have is a Honda Insight and they need something that fits more than 2 people and/or has some cargo space sometimes so I suppose it balances out.) Volkswagen is more convenient for service for him because the dealership is only one mile from his house. (It may be cheaper to get service somewhere other than the dealership after the warrenty runs out but any service covered by the warrenty is free.)
After hours of negotiating, we were able to get 30% off the MSRP at Volkswagen as well.
If I needed a new car this would be the time to buy it (but fortunately mine is still in great condition), if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes I would never have beleived 30% off MSRP was possible.
