Make Your Own iTunes Plus Files

by Carrie on October 21, 2007

With this week’s addition of many new songs and price drop of iTunes Plus music, it occurred to me that most of my CD collection had been converted to mp3s in 2004. I had ripped them all at 192kbps and as mp3s which was good quality, but listening to the iTunes Plus music I notice it has a significantly better quality so today I pulled out my CDs and I’m re-ripping as 256kbps AAC files. I’ve kept my CDs despite the fact that I’ve only listened to the music on them via iTunes for 3+ years now because if I get rid of the CDs I am legally giving up my license to listen to them. iTunes has a great option for re-importing and replacing your current files: just make sure the song, album, and artist names match what you have in your library, press import cd, then choose replace existing. This maintains your playcounts, date added, last listened to, etc.

I’ll also be reviving a few old mixes from burned CDs as iTunes playlists and then disposing of those old mixed CDs.
