Longs Drugs Transition to CVS

A few days ago, I decided to call around to a few of my local Longs stores (South Bay Area) and see what I could learn about when I can start getting in on the CVS deals. When I called, the first employee I spoke to asked me to hold but apparently didn’t press the hold button so I overheard some confusion between him and his manager about whether or not he could tell me anything about it. I learned that the registers and pharmacy systems have already been converted to CVS. Combo Longs/CVS ads will be coming in the next few weeks. Store remodels, renaming, and full transition to CVS ads and sales will occur this summer. When exactly I can start taking advantage of the deals, I’m still not sure about but hopefully when I get a combo ad I’ll be able to glean more information from that.

Today I decided to stop by Longs and see if there were any good clearance deals to be had. Much to my surprise, I walked into the store and there was a big pile of CVS store cards and sign up sheets. On the shelves there were CVS sale tags. For the sake of experimentation, I decided to test out a CVS deal and see if it would work.

I gave this deal a test drive:

Buy 1 Crest Cavity, Tartar, or Baking Soda & Peroxide toothpaste or Oral B Indicator toothbrush at $1.99, Get $1 ECB (Limit 2)
Use $0.75/1 coupon from the 4/5 P&G insert
$0.24 each after coupon and ECB

It didn’t work. The deal was not tagged on the shelf and I didn’t get any ECBs out of it but I have yet to find any really cheap Crest and it’s the one product I’m extremely brand loyal to so I needed more toothpaste and it was worth the cost to do the experiment.

Here’s the most interesting part:

At this point, I’ll be checking weekly to see when those ECB deals do start getting tagged on the shelf. I expect it to be quite soon.

In the meantime, I’m reading up on how to get the best deals at CVS. Here are the three best posts I’ve found:

Do any seasoned CVSers have any additional tips for me? Do any fellow Longs transitioners know anything else about what’s happening?
