Scrubs are my absolute favorite beauty treatment. They’re never ever cheap though so here are the recipes for a couple of my favorite cheap, easy, and all natural homemade scrubs. These treatments can even be organic (really organic, not the “organic” that gets slapped on retail beauty products and isn’t regulated at all) if you use all organic ingredients.
Baking Soda Face Scrub
Combine equal parts baking soda and liquid face wash, honey, or water (your preference). Apply to face and rub in small circular motions with your fingers for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Rinse with warm water.
Foot and Body Scrub
I think salt scrubs are so much more effective and luxurious than sugar scrubs. However, if you have any sort of open wounds or have recently shaved you’ll want to use sugar since salt will sting.
1/4 cup of each ingredient will yield enough for your feet or your body, if you want to scrub both then use 1/2 a cup of each ingredient.
Combine equal parts table salt, white sugar, or brown sugar and olive oil (add a squirt of liquid soap or body wash if you want a foamy scrub). Apply to feet and/or body and rub in circular motions until your skin feels baby soft and smooth. Rinse with warm water.

These sound wonderful! I know that sugar and salt are preservatives, but I was wondering if either of these bath indulgences would “keep” well enough to make great holiday gifts. Yes, it is July, and I am thinking of December, but I like to plan ahead. I am a new reader, and a new subscriber…I can’t remember how I happend to stumble here, but I really love what you have to offer…definitely my cup of tea. Thank you! Abbie

i’ve never tried keeping them long term, i usually just mix up what i need as i need it but i bet they would keep pretty well
@ Abbie- If you add a little vitamin e oil that helps preserve it! I made a candy cane sugar scrub for Christmas, put a little vitamin e in it, and it was still good last week! (The recipe is on my blog if you’re interested)
@ Carrie- I love using baking soda on my face! It feels wonderful. Glad to see I am not alone. A lot of people think I am a hippie

I just read another post that suggested using honey for your face as it has so many wonderful medicinal properties within itself. Apparently it’s really good for your skin and even can help with wrinkles. I’m going to definitely try it.

When i was in college i studied in Spain and my host mother would mix salt and olive oil and cover her whole body in it while she sat in the sauna at the local health club. Her skin was fantastic!! I think sitting in the dry heat let the olive oil absorb after she’d scrubbed her skin.
I’d never thought of sugar though. Thanks!
I think I might try this out as gifts. BTW, I just linked to your post on my Organizing Link Friday post today. I am having so much fun touring around your blog. Thanks!

Thanks! I have a book you might like, called “Homemade”. I got it from Reader’s Digest. It has recipes for “everything”. Any product you might buy for your home, anything you can make….it’s in there.
If you want one and can’t find it, let me know and I’ll locate it for you. I love mine. You just can’t imagine what all is in there. It wasn’t expensive either.
Happy VGNO

We have been using baking soda as a facial scrub for a few months now and would never go back to a commercial scrub. Will have to try out your foot scrub.

I love the baking soda +soap scrub for my face (usually I follow it with honey, separately) and it’s also great for cleaning the sink or bathtub!
The salt/sugar scrub sounds like a great idea. Maybe that’s the solution to my itchy toe calluses. I’ll try it! Thanks!

I’ll never go back to commercial facial scrubs. None of them give me the great skin that salt does. I’m in my forties, so I needed something that would turn over my skin. The skin on my face looks a lot younger now and less blemishes.
I’ve tried sugars in scrubs and masks and they are wonderful for softening the skin. Milk is nice as well. Awesome post.
