Grocery Deals 5/3

This week I spent $53.06 at Safeway. My savings totaled $48.91 or 49%. I saved $45.45 with my club card (they include the $10 Living Well catalina I spent in that savings). I saved only $2.75 with coupons this week (usually I about match my club card savings in coupons but not this week, at least it covers my $0.81 newspaper subscription). My grocery budget is $200 a month so this week’s spending is right on target (it’s more than okay that I’m well under budget most other weeks though).

This week I got some great items like flank steak, goat cheese, organic milk, and lots of fresh produce (carrots, organic lettuce, limes, asparagus, and sugar snap peas).

I also picked up some great sale items.

Diet Coke is my biggest vice – this week it was buy 2 12 packs, get 2 12 packs plus a 24 pack of Dasani water free. I also had a $1/1 12 pack coupon from MyCokeRewards. I’m normally very anti-bottled water, but the sensationalism around swine flu and people thinking they need to stock up supplies like bottled water for it has reminded me of another more long term threat I should be prepared for: earthquakes. I’ll keep this pack of bottled water in the garage for if and when “the big one” ever hits.

Other good sale items included:

  • Quaker Quakes – free after $1/1 mq RP 3/29, no limit but I only had 1 coupon
  • Keebler Fudge Shoppe Cookies – 77% off with club card, limit 3
  • Scrubbing Bubbles 22oz Bathroom Cleaner – 74% off with super coupon and $0.75/1 mq RP 3/29, limit 1

I have several bottles from SoBe that are glass & wash up well. The bottles are heavy & have survived falls on most things. (My in Laws ceramic tile kitchen floor was not one.) My boss's in Laws drink a lot of SoBe & so he gets the bottles free. I find them as convenient as the bottled water i used to buy all the time. It just takes a different mind set to remember to pick them up. On occasion i buy a bottle of water at a convenience store, but rarely.

When i buy water to store against an emergency, i find i usually get gallons rather than the individual bottles.

You do work hard at utilizing the coupons!

@Kathryn

I have some reusable bottles that I use on a daily basis but for long term water storage in case of an earthquake, I’m just not sure reusable is a good option – there may be issues with sterilization like when canning fruits.
