This week at Safeway I spent $28.37. I saved $8.12 total, 22%. I saved $7.12 with my club card. I saved another $1 with a coupon. Meal planning has really allowed me to cut back on the overall volume of food I buy and consequently cut back on the overall volume of food that goes to waste. Because I needed to buy so few items I was able to buy great quality things like organic milk, creme fraiche, and good chocolate chips.

I love that creme fraiche, too. But if you really want to be frugal, I would make it from scratch. Easy – 1 cup whipping creme, and 2 tablespoons buttermilk. Mix in a glass jar and 24 hours later, you have creme fraiche. (It does have to set in a somewhat warm area – in the winter I will bring it with me to work b/c I keep my house too cold – or I put the oven to 250 – turn it off after it gets there and leave the creme fraiche in there)
I will do the math for you where I live: $4.00/ 8 oz (1 cup) carton creme fraiche (that is the cheapest – usually it is $4.50). For 1 qt buttermilk $1.60 + 1 pint whipping creme $1.75. That is $3.35 for 2 cups or 16 ounces of cremefraiche. I use it the leftover buttermilk for buttermilk pancakes. The homemade creme fraiche is just as good as the store-bought stuff.
Gotta love cheap eats. We also do Angel Food Ministries. A lot of food for $30.
Mmm… the chocolate, creme fraiche and cherries look yummy! I love Sweet Baby Ray’s, but gave it up a few months ago because the first ingredient listed is high fructose corn syrup. Ugh! Now I have to find a good homemade bbq sauce recipe.
