Giveaway: Seventh Generation Disinfecting Cleaning Kit

by Carrie on April 6, 2010

This giveaway is now closed. The winner is Me in Millions.

Time to get a kick start on the spring cleaning season. I’m keeping things pretty simple this year on account of my illness and reduced activity level.

My spring cleaning plan this year looks like this:

  • decluttering
  • moving things I do want to keep to more efficient locations when applicable
  • disinfecting surfaces and things I touch
  • washing all my sheets and blankets (let’s not think about how long it’s been since I’ve washed my bedding)
  • washing random kitchen, bathroom, and living room stuff that doesn’t get in the regular weekly laundry (i.e. hot pads, throw pillows)
  • hopefully talking Dad into a thorough vacuuming and floor mopping (a little high intensity for me at this time, especially the dragging the vacuum up the stairs part)

This past week I’ve been testing out Seventh Generation’s multi-purpose cleaner, bathroom cleaner, and disinfecting wipes. Along with the products, I got a handy recycled plastic caddy to store them in. It’s perfect since Dad has been over to help clean a few times in the past few months and always complains that I keep all the cleaning stuff in the upstairs closet which he doesn’t thing is an efficient and convenient location. I loaded up the caddy with my new products, some rags, and some scrub brushes and it’s now living under the downstairs bathroom sink (it’s also easy to move it all to wherever he thinks is the perfect location for it when he’s here).

I’m using the multi-purpose cleaner to wipe down surfaces, knobs, handles, and switches in most rooms; the bathroom cleaner for everything in the bathroom; and the wipes are absolutely perfect for wiping down my Wii Fit balance board after using it (I don’t know about you but my feet get awfully sweaty especially when I’m doing Super Hula Hoop).

Good news on the cancer front, last week I had a PET scan and no more cancer showed up on it. But I do have a mass of scar tissue where the largest grapefruit sized tumor was in my lung cavity on the left and I have a non-cancerous abnormality going on in my right lung causing it to not fully inflate at this time (more tests on that later this week). I have to say that the best part about these products is that it’s nice to be able to use cleaning products that don’t make me worry about what’s getting in my lungs while I’m already having lung issues. I only notice my lung issues when I try to take a deep breath or I cough and traditional chemical cleaning products do have a history of making my cough so the less chemicals the better especially at this time.

Seventh Generation Disinfecting Cleaning Kit

I have one Seventh Generation Disinfecting Cleaning Kit that includes a disinfecting multi-surface cleaner, bathroom cleaner, wipes, a copy of The Conscious Kitchen, a cleaning caddy made from recycled plastic, and two rolls of 100% recycled, unbleached paper towels to giveaway to an It’s Frugal Being Green reader.

The best thing we have done for the environment is getting my parents on board with recycling at their house! It is amazing how much less ‘trash’ you put out each week when you recycle everything.

2 Carrie April 6, 2010 at 7:59 PM

absolutely. most weeks i’ve got one bag of trash and a stuffed recycling bin

3 Rachel Manley April 6, 2010 at 8:20 PM

We just recently moved and our new city has requires that you participate in their curbside recycling. I have to say I love it! We have cut down our trash by more than half, it is so amazing! Plus we now live in a state that does deposits on cans and bottles which is another great way to recycle!

This year, I’ve made a big effort to purchase food in glass containers, instead of plastic. I then reuse the glass jars to hold homemade goodies and leftovers. Already had less trash, but my new goal is more reusing and reducing, and relying less on recycling to be “green.”

I’ve noticed a huge difference with my asthma since switching to natural cleaners, btw. Hope you’re feeling better. I’m impressed you’re still blogging and dealing with cancer.

6 Whitney April 6, 2010 at 8:37 PM

The best thing I have done is get rid of my plastic dishes/containers (recycling them). I have cancer too and I’m determined to get rid of anything that might be carcinogenic. I’ve been using 7th Gen stuff for a while now – and I like them!

7 Carrie April 6, 2010 at 8:50 PM

one of the things i’m quite thankful for is that i’m sure my cancer (hodgkin’s lymphoma) is a side effect of the especially bad case of mono i had several years ago (it’s one of the oldest identified cancers and more than 50% of patients with my cancer report having a bad case of mono and an estimated 1 in 1000 cases of mono turns into this cancer within 5 years). it’s nice to know that it wasn’t because of something i did or used or could control. though i am irritated that that one case of mono has haunted me so severely.

I’m thrilled to be in an area where paper recycling is so much easier – I recycle something every single day.
(I subscribe AND follow, but I don’t Facebook at all.)

11 Carrie April 6, 2010 at 8:56 PM

i remember when we first got curbside paper recycling a few years ago. it was a huge deal. i think the paper bin has been stuffed full every week since.

12 Tammy L April 6, 2010 at 10:29 PM

So far this year… well, I think using cloth diapers probably makes the most impact! :) We have also stayed home a lot, or walked places, since having our 4th child (but not having a van yet). :D

13 Carrie April 6, 2010 at 10:51 PM

being on disability leave and having the hospital only 2 miles away from my house has lead me to drive very little this year also, i’m on my second tank of gas so far in 2010.

Best thing to reduce environmental impact this year? Trying (and succeeding!) in keeping our electricity bill the same in our 1900 sq ft house as it was in our 900 square foot apartment. :)

17 Heather April 7, 2010 at 2:34 AM

The best thing I have done to reduce my impact on the environment is to not only recycle here at home, but to recycle at church as well. Many papers & boxes get ‘tossed’ after a week’s service, so I sort it & add it to my own weekly recycling.

The best thing I have done for the environment is to teach my children things that they can do. They know what needs to be recycled. They turn the water off while brushing their teeth. They use reusable water bottles. Every little thing will make a difference.

The best thing I have done this year is to stop using paper plates. They are such a wasteful item, and it only takes another few seconds to wash and reuse your beautiful dishes! We also recycle any and everything and use reusable bags and water bottles. We’re getting greener by the day!

26 MM April 7, 2010 at 7:59 AM

Yeah to the Good news from your PET scan!

27 Steph April 7, 2010 at 8:08 AM

We recycle everything. We don’t buy bottled water and reduced our use of paper towels and paper plates. Our former city required curbside composting which we loved to do…now we’re considering composting in our new home. Baby steps but getting better! Great news on your PET scan!

My big thing? We stopped buying paper towels. We use rags made of old shirts. The 2nd biggest thing we did was stop buying commercial cleaners. I make my own now and use a steam mop instead of Pine Sol, Bleach, or other cleaners on my floor.

I’m off to find you on Twitter!

74 Erica April 11, 2010 at 10:20 AM

The best thing I’ve done to reduce my impact is go vegan. Eating 1lb of meat emits the same amount of greenhouse gases an SUV 40 miles. And I used to eat a lot of meat, so I was practically trekking the globe in an SUV.

The best thing we’ve done to reduce our impact on the environment so far this year is switch from disposable diapers to cloth (specifically gDiapers). I feel so much better knowing that my daughters diapers are not adding to the billions in the landfills each year. I also feel good knowing that cloth is a much better choice for her. I recently read Healthy Child, Healthy World and we are in the process of making our home a safer, nontoxic environment. We love Seventh Generation baby wipes and are ready to switch our cleaners.
