How Does Your Garden Grow?

by Carrie on August 12, 2009

I hope your garden is doing better than mine because I’m at the point where I have to admit defeat. I don’t think I’d call myself a black thumb but I’m clearly not a green thumb, maybe I can be dark blue.

I’ve been trying to water two or three times a week but it’s been hot and a) I’m not getting around to every scheduled watering and b) I think even if I was it still wouldn’t be enough.

Mistakes made and lessons learned. I plan to do more research on what plants take how much water, particularly in my climate, and I hope to find some sort of automatic timer I can hook up to my hose/sprinkler set up so I don’t have to worry so much about the watering.

How’s your garden doing this year? Do you have any watering advice for me for next year?

I am having problems with the uncooperative weather here in Cincinnati. We have had a spell of cold weather. My tomato plants did not like the cold. I have only harvested 5 tomatos and 2 zuchini. Sad.

I too… have had troubles this year… We’ve had major rain and cool unsummerlike temps until about a week ago… it was mid July before plants decided maybe it’d be nice to grow… and with all the water… I’ve had mosquitoes the size of Texas… so you can’t think about going outside without being bitten… and I had several trees… granted they were citrus trees… but all five of them died this past month…from MIRACLE GRO! No… I didn’t over scoop…. but that crap now killed 2 lemon trees, a lime tree, an orange and a tangerine tree… and 4 hanging petunias, one of which was my mothers day gift from my kids. MOST UNHAPPY WITH THAT STUFF…. I’m very close to writing in a complaint. Would you??

And we got the tomato blight… so out of 20 tomato plants… I have 4 left that are not infected… :( A bad year indeed…

We had pretty good plants, but the deer got in the fence and destroyed all of our corn, some of the honeydew, and the tops of the tomato plants. We need a better plan to keep them out next year.

I have had some successes this year – 30 tomato plants, all with fruit on (not a lot going red yet (but I have hopes) First lot of courgettes (zuchinni) were ripped up by squirrels or cats but second lot planted in tubs now fruiting. Lots and lots of cucumbers (about to start pickling). A few peas which were the best i’ve ever tasted, some spring onions, bolting rocket and mizuna, rainbow chard and spinach (masses blanched and frozen). Got hit badly by cabbage white caterpillars and am developing a healthy hatred of butterflies….

Have found that the About.Com: Gardening pages hold lots of very good info about complementary planting, planting to deter pests and encourage the good insects into your garden. May have a lot more but I haven’t had time to investigate yet.

We had trouble with our garden this year too, although we are hoping that it all turns out in the end. We planted tomatoes transplants, broccoli transplants, cauliflower transplants, onions, and peas and bean seeds in May. Everything seemed o.k. except for the beans and peas, which didn’t seem to be growing at all. May had been VERY wet though. But on the bean and pea side, we were growing nothing but weeds, so we tilled the area under. And decided to replant just beans. Well, June started out HOT, and then WET, WET, WET. We didn’t get the beans planted until mid July. But they are growing well now, although now actual beans yet. The rest of the garden went well thankfully.

Aww plants are tricky. We have some sort of rare miniature dragon trees in our office and one died because it didn’t like too much water but it also didn’t like not quite enough water. I say get indestructible plant types until you can do a bit more research. I hear carrots are good.
