Fighting the Urge to Shop

by Carrie on February 28, 2007

I’m fighting gigantic urges to buy stuff today.

First thing this morning, I check my email and J. Crew is having 20% off final sale items. I check and they have some cute tall length light grey pants in size 10, okay but maybe I really wear a size 8. And I don’t even wear grey anyway so why am I thinking about buying them? Well they’re only $40 which is cheap for tall size pants. But I resisted because I don’t think I’ll ever wear light grey pants and being final sale I can’t return them and they’ll likely be too big.

Then I get to work and it’s slow so I browse ebay. Find a cute Lacoste pullover sweater in black. Write the seller to find out what it’s made of. It’s cotton, which is awesome because I’m allergic to wool. But then I remember that it’s black and I already have 5 black sweaters and could really use some in other colors. So I didn’t bid. Which was okay because when I put it on my watch list it was at $30 which would’ve been a great price but it ended up going for $63 which is more than I want to pay for a 6th black sweater.

And I’ve got a 15% off everything at Bloomingdale’s coupon which is good today only. Which would be awesome if I were otherwise planning on buying anything at Bloomingdale’s, but since I don’t already have anything in mind I need to resist going there after work and finding something I “need”. Good thing I left the coupon at home because Bloomingdale’s is on my way home.

So far so good, but it’s been a hard day trying to remind myself that I don’t even really want these things I have the urge to buy. The plan for tonight is to resist shopping for myself and to go home and read my Shopaholic & Baby book that I really did need to buy right away (reading never hurt anyone right?)… and now I’m thinking maybe it was reading that last night that is making me want to shop today…
