Eco-friendly Laundry Tips

by Carrie on February 25, 2009

I like the idea behind using eco-friendly laundry detergent but after trying a few different types, I just don’t feel like they’re effective or budget friendly. Instead, I’m using concentrated free and clear (no added dyes or fragrances) types of detergent from the traditional laundry brands.

I’m also using these laundry tips to make my laundry as eco-friendly as possible while still using the detergent of my choice.

Washing

  • Only run full loads
  • Avoid fabric softener – I only use it on knit/crocheted blankets and sweaters
  • Use cold water (I use hot only if I have a full load of towels, sheets, and/or white socks)
  • Wear your clothes more than once between washings – the only things I won’t rewear are socks, underwear, and the shirt layer closest to my body

Drying

  • Air dry rather than using the dryer
  • If you insist on using the dryer, divide your clothes by weight (light knits vs denim) rather than by color
  • Always clean out your lint trap before running your dryer
  • If you have more than one load to dry, do them in a row to utilize the heat still in the dryer from the first load
