I’m noticing a major trend in the comments on Kitchen Stewardship‘s Why I Love Microfiber Cloths guest post here at It’s Frugal Being Green. Several of you feel like you’re using too many paper towels.
The most effective way to cut down paper towel use for me has been to put the one roll of paper towels I have in the house in one of the out of the way kitchen cabinets. Out of sight, out of mind. I’ve got dish towels and wash cloths much more easily accessible so they are my easy first choice.
On the few occasions I still need paper towels (almost exclusively limited to cooking bacon in the microwave or cleaning up cat puke), they’re still there but I don’t turn to them by default for day to day cleaning tasks.
By keeping the paper towels out of sight, I’ve cut my usage down to less than half a roll in the past year.

That totally worked for us. Out of sight, out of mind. Oh, and then eventually, I just vowed not to buy any more. My BIL asked for a paper towel the other day when his daughter spilled something and I honestly had no clue what he was talking about. A paper what?

So true! Plus, guests won’t grab a zillion of them for a quick clean-up when you’re not looking!
