Everyday Food: Great Food Fast and Martha Stewart’s Cookies are two of my favorite cookbooks. The minute I saw this third book was being published in the same format, I instantly preordered it from Amazon.
My first go at a recipe in this book was the devil’s food cupcakes with chocolate ganache frosting which after getting the frosting on them appear to be the cover cupcake. The cake portion of the recipe was very straight forward and simple and baked up beautifully. The frosting was a little trickier, it involves refrigerating and stirring every five minutes for an unspecified number of intervals (I’d guess it took me about 6 rounds) but once complete the frosting was beautiful and delicious. I piped the frosting on rather than spreading it with an offset spatula because a) I don’t have an offset spatula and b) piping is so fast and easy. Overall I’m very satisfied with how this recipe came out and would definitely make it again (someday after I make several of the other recipes in the book as well).
The book features great variety in flavor combination. Obviously there is a slew of delectable chocolate cupcakes but there are also many fruit, nut, and even vegetable based recipes.
I also always love the back of these books where there is information about how and why to use certain techniques and ingredients. If you take the time to read through these portions, you’ll be able to better understand how you can change and what you can substitute in recipes.
There’s also an entire section devoted to decorating variations that can be applied to any of the cupcake flavors. Many of the decorating tips have been demonstrated on the free Martha Stewart iTunes video podcast which I highly recommend watching.
