Decluttering the Computer

by Carrie on November 2, 2007

Last Sunday I ordered a new computer, in the past days as I’ve been waiting for it to arrive I’ve been preparing all my content so I can have a beautiful smooth experience with the new computer from the beginning. A few things of note occured:

1) I’ve been very excited about the 30 day trial of iWork that comes with my new computer. I’ve seen some excellent slide shows made with Keynote and have been wanting to try it out for months. I plan on using Apple’s “Migration Assistant” software to copy over all my files and applications to me new computer. While cleaning up my applications folder and deleting random programs I downloaded and ended up not liking or never using I discovered that I already had a 30 day trial of iWork waiting for me to launch it. I’ve had it for years. Check your applications folder and see what’s in there.

2) I have my own domain that I use for my design portfolio and use an email address associated with it for my professional contacts. A major problem I’ve been having with it is spam control. I only get maybe 3 emails a month through that since I currently have a separate full time job but I got 10 to 20 spam emails a day because it has no spam filtering. I finally got it set up through Google Apps so that it behaves like a Gmail account but I keep my existing address. This will seriously lighten the load on how much email I have to sift through. I recommend everyone who has their own domain set up their email through Google Apps.

Remember to recycle old computers and batteries, just take them to your local recycling point.
