Costco Trip 6/3

by Carrie on June 4, 2009

I don’t have my own Costco membership but every two or three months I go along with my mom to pick up some things that are just so much cheaper at Costco that it doesn’t make sense to buy them anywhere else. Costco did not used to let non-members check out separately, but now as long as you are accompanied by a member it’s not a problem. Keep in mind that Costco does not accept Visa or Mastercard.

Here’s what I picked up this time along with unit prices for easy comparison to other stores:

  • almonds ($3.33/lb)
  • butter ($1.60/lb vs this week’s Safeway sale price of $2.49/lb – Safeway has on occasion had butter at $0.99/lb limit 1)
  • chocolate chips ($0.12/oz vs $0.25/oz at Safeway)
  • Clear Care contact lens solution ($0.44/oz vs $0.71/oz at drugstore.com)
  • Foster Farms boneless, skinless chicken breasts ($2.99/lb vs $3.99/lb for Safeway brand)
  • peonies ($8.99 for the bunch)
  • pepper in a grinder bottle ($0.63/oz)
  • tortellini ($2.99/lb)
  • walnuts ($3.99/lb) - my dad recommends freezing walnuts bought it bulk because they tend to go rancid before you can use them up if you don’t

Other items that I didn’t buy this time but won’t buy anywhere other than Costco are:

  • maple syrup
  • yeast

Yes, there are many things that if we can’t get it at costco that month we just go without. How do you store your chocolate chips?

I keep them in the pantry until the bag is opened. Once it’s opened I keep them in the fridge.
