What I’m Reading 6/4

by Carrie on June 4, 2010

Trying a new format for my What I’m Reading roundups. In the roundups, I’ll pick only the best of the best and add my thoughts. If you still want to see the list I was doing before, you can check out my new and improved blog roll. Let me know what you think of the new format and what your preferences are.

The Local Cook shows us how to make formage blanc. It looks so easy. When I went on my tour of the Cowgirl Creamery in April, we each got a few full size products to take home and formage blanc was one of them. I just finished my tub earlier this week. It’s so good on a bagel in place of cream cheese or spread on crackers.

Cheap Healthy Good weighs in on food, finance, and judging others. Posts like this remind me that I’m very fortunately to be able to afford all of whatever type of food I could ever dream of wanting. It’s truly a luxury and I think most people in the same position often forget that.

At Finance for a Freelance Life, you can read about how Mrs. Micah is moving past wasteful frugality. I’m a big believe in enjoying quality items to the fullest. I’d rather have fewer, higher quality things that I use all the time than a house full of junk. Whatever you do, don’t buy the high quality stuff and then “save it” by also buying the junk and using that instead.

Get Rich Slowly suggests when you save money, actually put it in savings. I don’t always do this, but I do have a special ING account that I put “extra” money from things like stuff I sell on eBay in.

People are going nuts over this $149 Wii deal and the $199 Wii with free Wii Sports Resort deal but I think most people are missing the point that the standard Wii now always comes with Wii Sports Resort.

Northern California’s first Sprouts store opens June 2nd at 7am in Sunnyvale, CA (hey, that’s my town!). It’s located at El Camino Real and Sunnyvale where Circuit City used to be.

I’ve been admiring their deals on organic foods over at Saving Sense with Cents and just cannot wait for them to open here.

Get a free reusable tote bag with your purchase on opening day at the Sunnyvale location.

Not to be outdone, Safeway will be opening a huge new location across the street from Sprouts by the end of the year.

Even More Impressed with Amazon Prime

by Carrie on May 12, 2010

Amazon PrimeOver the past couples years, I’ve had a cumulative four months or so of free Amazon Prime trials. About a month ago, I decided to finally splurge for the $75 year subscription that gives you unlimited 2 day shipping on all your Amazon.com orders.

This week, I’ve become even more impressed with the program for two reasons.

  1. You can apply your Prime shipping to existing preorders.
I already had preorders placed for Super Mario Galaxy 2 (when you preorder it you get a $20 credit for future video game purchases from Amazon) and The Sims 3 Ambitions. When you view your open orders you can hit the change shipping speed button and select 2 day shipping and get your Prime benefits on those existing orders.
  2. You can share your subscription with up to 4 family members and they don’t have to live at the same address as you.
This worked out great for my sister who lives in another city where she goes to college. She was able to order a book she needed for school and use my Prime benefits.

I’m almost six months into my treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma now. People have come out of the woodwork wanting to send me care packages. If you know someone with cancer and want to put a little something together for them, here are five ideas for things that are sure to get put to good use.

Lotions and Lipbalms
Skin is one of the major things affected by chemotherapy and radiation. My skin has been so dry at times it’s actually split open. If you’re a regular couponer you probably already have a stash of freebies you can pass on. (You probably also have a huge stash of free shampoo and conditioner but unless the person has expressed interest in these avoid them as hair can be a very, very sensitive issue.)

Food
It may be hard for your friend to get out and grocery shop or they might not have any interest in cooking or even eating. Consider easy to prepare and eat non-perishables like granola bars, cereal, pasta and sauce, and soup. Fiber rich foods and yogurt help with digestive tract issues. Minty gum, candy, and tea help settle upset stomachs. And chocolate is always great for a mood boost.

Tissues and Wipes
Full size or travel packs will be appreciated. My nose has now been running for almost 6 months straight and my face would be raw were it not for several boxes of Kleenex and Puffs with lotion. I’ll be the first to admit that wet wipes are not very green at all and before the cancer I never understood why anyone would use them, but when your entire digestive tract is raw from entry to exit and toilet paper feels like steel wool, an aloe wipe can be extremely soothing.

Comfortable Clothes
Pajamas, work out wear, t-shirts, and sweats are almost all I wear these days and having plenty of extras is really helpful on those days I’m too dizzy to even walk to the washing machine in the garage. Look especially for items without any metal whatsoever: xrays, CT, and PET scans are a lot less stressful when you don’t have to change into those breezy hospital gowns.

Entertainment
While it may seem awesome to have unlimited free time, it actually really sucks to be on disability leave. You’ve got 8 more hours every day for weeks or months and no idea what to do with all that time. Books, magazines, movies, music, and video games are a life saver when it comes to filling time. Even if you just pass on a pile of magazine back issues or lend a book or DVD you think the person would like it’ll be appreciated.

And of course don’t forget personal contact. Emails, texts, and phone calls to check on how things are going or catch up with an old friend are awesome. I even appreciate Facebook messages from those people I barely knew back in high school.

If you’re particularly close, let your friend or family member know what your availability is and go to an appointment or treatment with them. With as many as seven appointments a week (and I’m sure there are some people who have even more than me), the doctor’s office can get pretty dreadful.
