I’ve found that the biggest ways I can save money on food are related to meat.
The first way is to not eat meat at all. I’m not a vegetarian but I would say I average eating meat less than one time a day. When I do eat meat I usually eat only half a chicken breast or steak at a time and eat the other half as leftovers for a later meal.
The second way is to buy my meat at Costco. I find meat at Costco costs less than half the regular price at Safeway and always below Safeway’s lowest sale prices as well. Boneless skinless chicken breasts are usually around $2.49/lb. Ground beef around $2.99/lb. And steaks like top sirloin around $3.99/lb. (They have a large variety of more expensive meats as well but I generally stay away from those.) Costco memberships run $50/yr but you don’t have to have a membership to shop their as long as you are accompanied by someone who does have a membership – they didn’t used to let you check out separately from the person who has the card but they do now. I tag along with my mom every month or so and pick up one pack of chicken and one pack of beef each time. When I get home I freeze those in individual portions.
