Best Quality Meat at the Best Price

by Carrie on July 5, 2009

Continuing my quest for the best quality meat at the best prices, here’s what I picked up at Costco today. I had heard rumors that Costco was going to start carrying USDA Prime grade meats but this time was the first time I actually saw it in the store. Prime cuts were available for Rib Eye and New York Strip steaks and ran about $2 more per pound.

I use approximately one of my smaller portioned packages of chicken and beef each week so the chicken should last me one month and the beef should last me two months. At this level of quality and price I’m spending approximately $50 a month on meat for one, sometimes two people.

Boneless, Skinless Organic Chicken Breasts

This is my first time buying organic chicken so we’ll have to see how the taste and texture compares to my usual Foster Farms chicken. $5.99/lb, the package I got weighed a total of 3.12lbs and contained 8 pieces. This makes each piece approximately 6.25 ounces vs the 12 ounces each Foster Farms non-organic chicken breast weighs. I’m aiming to eat about 3 ounces of meat per serving and I’m usually cooking for one or two people with leftovers so I repackaged the chicken breasts in groups of two before putting them in the freezer, when I cook with those packages each should yield 4 servings (half a breast per serving) at 3.125 ounces each. Each 4 serving meal will cost $4.67 and each serving will cost $1.17.

USDA Prime New York Strip Steak

Prime grade costs $10.99/lb vs the $8.89/lb Costco charges for choice. The package I picked up was 2.91lbs and I divided it into 4 smaller packages before freezing. Each of these smaller packages comes in weighing 11.64 ounces and costs $8. I expect each of those packages to yield 2-4 individual servings at a cost of $2-4 per serving, yielding 4 servings would be my ideal 3 ounce sized meat portion but I already know I’m going to want to eat more each time.

USDA Choice Flank Steak

$5.99/lb, one package was 3.08lbs. It contained two steaks and I cut each of those into 2 pieces before packaging so I have 4 small packages in the freezer now. Each of those packages comes in at 12.32 ounces and should yield 4 individual servings. Each meal will cost $4.61 and each serving will cost $1.15.

What did you think of the organic chicken? I’ll definitely have to watch for the USDA prime meat at Costco, thanks for letting us know!

I haven’t eaten any of it yet but I’ll be trying it later this week. I’ll let you know then.
