This month I’m 10% over budget. That’s okay though considering I’ve been under budget the past several months in a row.
I can’t share an image of how I did on my budgeted categories this month because mint.com kind of messed up my system and I won’t be back on track with their new features until October (at least I hope come October they’ll be making sense to me).
In August, mint.com rolled out some new features including allowing you to budget for expenses that come up less often than every month. My car insurance is due every 6 months and my car registration fees are due annually. Both are coming due in September. I set the appropriate time frames in the new mint.com interface but there is no way to tell it that I saved towards these expenses in all the months prior to August as well so it has me marked down for much more money than necessary in those categories and throws all the numbers off.
Mint.com has also introduced an Everything Else category. Perfect for my irregular expenses like Christmas and cash atm withdrawals that I want included in my overall budget when I use those categories but which I don’t really expect to use so I set the budget for them to $0. Or so I thought, at this time mint.com is also including transfers between accounts in that Everything Else category so that my full payments for last month’s credit card bills are showing up in this months budget as additional spending. And no matter how I try to add the numbers they’re showing me up I just can’t figure out how they’re getting the totals they are getting.
For now I know what number I desire my total budget to account for and I can see my actual spending for the month in the Trends panel on the Overview page but the math behind their new budgeting functions isn’t make sense right now.

I’ve been using Mint for almost a year now and am experiencing the same problems with their new features. I can’t tell if I’ve actually spent more money in the past month or if it just looks that way. I’d love to hear about it if you discover a fix.
