Making a Coupon Binder to Organize Your Coupons

in couponing, organizing

This is a guest post from Melissa who blogs at Saving Cents with Sense, where she focuses on finding the best deals, freebies, and money saving tips for families. Based in Arizona, she highlights the grocery and drug store deals with coupon match-ups each week so everyone can learn to live well without breaking the budget!

I’ve tried several different methods of coupon organization, including coupon accordion style holders and the “uncut method”, but when my husband gave the great idea to try to organize my coupons in a binder, I was thrilled. Not only does this organization system help to cut down on time in the store, but I feel so organized since I can easily look for a coupon that I may need.

Making the coupon binder was not that difficult, but did require a few materials:

3-ring Binder- There are amazing Back to School deals right now, so it is a great time to grab a binder at a low price (or even FREE after rebate). I found mine at Office Max in the clearance section, but I also recommend checking CVS, Walgreens, Staples, or Walmart.

Dividers- Again, this is a great item to get right now with Back to School Sales. You can pick up 3-ring binder dividers, or make your own with manila envelopes (just punch holes and add labels). Either way, this should only cost you a few dollars.

Baseball Cards plastic sheets- These can also be found at any office supply store, Target, Walmart, etc. I actually grabbed my husband’s old baseball collection for my binder (he didn’t mind!), but Target does have a pack of 35 for only $5, so if you bought 100 sheets, it would only cost you $15.

After assembling the Coupon Binder, I divided my coupons into categories based on types of products (they were already divided like this with my previous coupon holder). Note: I have also heard of people dividing up the binder by alphabet, so this is another area that you’ll want to find what works best for you.

Some of my categories include:

Frozen Foods
Fresh Foods (bread, dairy, etc)
Breakfast
Side dishes
Drinks
Baking Products
Paper Products
Baby Products

Tooth Care
Face Products
Hair Care

Body Care
Feminine Products
Health Care Products
Cleaning Items
Miscellaneous Products
Restaurant Coupons

I have had a few people stop me and think I work at the store (LOL!), but this has been a great opportunity to tell them about my blog (Saving Cents with Sense) and how I save an average of 65% on my grocery bill each month!

I organize my coupons using a similar theory but use those small photo albums instead. Each category has a page and the coupons fit nicely into the slot and the album is small enough to fit in my purse.

My mom has been doing this for our fastfood coupons etc., but has not started it for the grocery coupons yet. Part of me thinks that’d she’d have too many to put in a handy binder.
